Tens of Thousands of Flint Residents Exposed to Lead in Drinking Water

For nearly two years, tens of thousands of Flint residents were exposed to lead-contaminated drinking water when city officials failed to add corrosion controls to tap water. This allowed lead and other chemicals to leach from pipes into the water supply.

Lead serves no useful purpose in the human body. It’s presence in the body can lead to toxic effects, regardless of age, gender, or exposure pathway. (Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry)

Napoli Shkolnik PLLC, who served as co-liaison and negotiating counsel in the settlement, subject to court approval, are here to help all children and adults who have not retained a lawyer but who wish to make a claim.

There is No Identified Safe Blood Lead Level for Children

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, there is no identified “safe” blood lead level or threshold for lead in children for which no risk of poor developmental or intellection function is expected.

Even low levels of lead exposure have been linked to nervous system damage, impaired hearing, anemia, impaired function of blood cells, and slowed growth. In rare cases, lead poisoning can cause seizures, comas, and death.

Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of lead poisoning or exposure. Lead inhibits the bodies of growing children from absorbing minerals that are essential forproper brain development. The signs of lead toxicity may not be noticed until a childreaches middle school. The lack of noticeable symptoms does not mean “no adverse effect.”

Lead Poisoning Can Cause Delayed Health Effects

While children may experience immediate neurological problems form lead, childhood lead poisoning can lead to delayed health issues later in life, including:

  • ADHD, delayed learning, and other issues impacting school performance
  • Developmental problems with offspring
  • Hypertension
  • Renal (Kidney) problems
  • Reproductive problems

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), lead can pass from a pregnant mother to her unborn baby, putting pregnant mothers at risk for miscarriages or causing babies to be born prematurely. In addition, lead can harm a baby’s brain, kidneys, and nervous system, causing a child to have future learning or behavioral problems. Lead can also be passed through breast milk.

Settlement Reached, Subject to Court Approval

A multimillion-dollar settlement has been reached in the Flint Water Crisis Litigation. That settlement is pending court approval.

Young children are especially vulnerable to the effects of lead poisoning and exposure, including developmental delay, learning disabilities, and neurological damage. The proposed settlement, subject to court approval, would prioritize serving minors and their families who were affected by the 2014 water contamination crisis.
